A Guide To Choosing The Right Driveway

When it comes to choosing the right driveway, there are a number of options to consider. With a few different services offering different advantages, you may be at a loss of which is best for you. As a result, we’ve created this useful guide. Here, we will take you through the different benefits of each popular driveway choice, and help you make an informed decision for your property.

The Different Types Of Driveways

Although there are quite a few variations to choose from, we’ve outlined below the three main types of driveway, and their advantages to consider:

Tarmac Driveway

Tarmac is the benchmark of driveway surfacing. It’s been used for an extremely long time, and for good reason too. It’s found on almost all public roads within the UK, and Highways England chooses this product due to its versatility and efficiency.

Tarmac as a standard is affordable. It’s tar, mixed with aggregate and applied whilst hot to set a fast and hard. Additionally, it’s straightforward to lay and can be done in a fraction of the time compared to other surfacing alternatives. Unfortunately, there isn’t much customisation when it comes to tarmac, but you make that sacrifice for its cost-effective and efficient nature.

Block Paving

Block paving is arguably the oldest surfacing style. Cobbles and lock-in road styles have been used since the Roman era and beyond. Although it’s an age-old technique, the style has developed quite significantly. Block paving offers a versatile decorative option that other surfacing materials do not. They come in a wide variety of patterns (insert link to other blog here) and can complement the aesthetic of a property. Although the technique for laying block paving can be more time consuming, the end product far outweighs the time and cost spent.

Gravel

Gravel is the most affordable and easy to install driveway of them all. It involves basic ground preparation to mitigate water flow and weed growth, and is simply a case of tipping and levelling to an end product. Fortunately, it also comes with a variety of different decorative styles. There are a number of different types of gravel to choose from with a range of colours, too. If you’re looking for a quick and cost effective driveway, then gravel may be the perfect solution.
